Front desk volunteers work in the “House,” which is open every weekday from 10-3.  We provide access to showers, mail, lockers, telephone, a computer, pet food, and other basic necessities.  It is also a place to meet friends and find refuge from the weather.  Volunteers help run the shower list, pass out mail, distribute hygiene supplies, along with a number of other tasks.  

It is most helpful to us to have volunteers who can commit to a predictable schedule of hours each week or month, even if they are relatively few in number.  Volunteer shifts last 3 hours.  

Offer friendship and support to new tenants experiencing feelings of isolation and loneliness.  You will be accompanied by JOIN’s Retention Worker for the first few visits.  Visit regularly and assist in connecting individuals with recreation and other support outside the home.  May involve neighborhood orientation, providing rides to appointments or grocery shopping, or assisting with childcare.  

Access to a car is very helpful.  Please commit to at least one hour a week.

JOIN relies on volunteers to help our newly housed individuals build new relationship networks in the community.   Regular community events provide an opportunity for people, who often struggle with feelings of isolation, to socialize and enjoy themselves outside of their homes.  The possibilities for this kind of support are as diverse as the interests and abilities of our volunteers and the individuals we assist into housing.  

Possible activities include dinners, game nights, writers groups, biking groups, or knitting groups.  Be creative! 

Collect food items from local agencies, box, and deliver them to households struggling to make ends meet.  JOIN’s Volunteer Coordinator will call or email the food box volunteers with the names, addresses, and availability of households in need of a food box.  Volunteers deliver the boxes within a week of the requests.  Access to a car is very helpful.
